I’m not sure if it was because I didn’t know how to tie my belt, I came up to class barefoot or because we were doing neck locks in my first session; either way, for the first time in about 4 years my mind took a holiday from life. Other than getting in the water when I can, jiujitsu is a space where i’m not thinking about work, worrying if i’m working hard enough or wondering if I left the oven on. It’s a free space in my mind for 60 minutes. Ask yourself right now: when did I have free space in my mind? Life’s turbulence will wobble us everyday: bills, stress, relationships, transport, illness, bad luck, feeling down, poor sleep, sadness, keeping up with the joneses. To name a few. To keep the turbulence from wobbling us too much, we need an outlet.
